Certificate III & IV in Fitness and Personal Training ABOUT ME...As a Clinical Nutritionist and Personal Trainer, I want to let you know about me and what it is that makes me passionate about fitness and nutrition.
As a single mother of two gorgeous girls in high school, I understand how hard it is to find time to look after your own health and nutrition when you have to be looking out for everyone else's as well. I became a personal trainer in 2013, and Clinical Nutritionist, completing a Bachelor of Health Science in 2018, specialising in Nutritional and Dietetic Medicine, at Endeavour College in Sydney. I'm so grateful for all the help I have had in completing my studies, because let me tell you, it was not an easy road. Juggling kids, work, study and the household duties, there was not much time left at the end of the week. Which goes to show no one can do anything alone, support is important. Starting any life change whether it's like myself with studying or a journey that is about health and fitness for a better future, we need to ask for help.....don't be afraid to ask for help, this is one thing I have learned. |
Let me tell you a bit more...
My childhood was spent on a farm in New South Wales, just outside a small town called Tumbarumba, where I lived until I turned 11, then when we moved to Sydney. Dad was a farmer, but decided in his 40's to become a lawyer.....with 2 daughters, it looked like we probably weren't going to become budding farmers ourselves. So he studied before the sun came up and before he fed and milked the cow and then at the end of the day before bed - he is my inspiration behind a lot of what I do and hope to achieve.
His death in 2013 was devistating to my family and I can only hope I am making him proud...
I have great memories of growing up on a farm. Mum supplied the family with fresh fruit and vegetables from the garden, and fresh eggs from the hens. Milk was straight from 'Mrs Moo Cow' every morning and dad brought meat home from the farm.
I wouldn't say my sister and I were much help in this area, but we spent days outside joining dad in the cattle yards, climbing rocks, jumping through sprinklers, making mud pies and cubby houses, we were always outside.
I look at my kids today and at the difference in our childhoods, our worlds is very different.....
We visit the countryside regularly and we always return with big smiles and feeling rested - there is something to be said for no mobile phones, or wifi, lots of country air and big skies.
My working career started in the food industry. I worked in five star hotels and restaurants, eventually moving into management of cafes and eventually ran my own catering business. I had a passion for food until I was diagnosed with Meniere's Disease in 1995.
This disease of the inner ear causes severe bouts of vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss. I could spend up to 10 hours lying down and unable to move, once a month or so. Food containing high levels of sodium would trigger these 'attacks'.
Firstly, I was able manage it with medication and a low salt diet up until I had my first baby, then it kicked to a higher gear, leaving me unable to care for my daughter at times due to bouts of severe vertigo.
After an operation the attacks stopped for a good 5 or 6 years. But during an extremely stressful time in my life the attacks returned. This forced me to really look at what I was eating and the nutritional choices I was making. I struggled for a while to find food that didn't contain sodium, as I was used to eating foods from packets. These contained large amounts of preservatives, additives and sodium - my nemesis! So I was forced to look outside my world of packaged convenience food....
Although my diet wasn't too bad, it wasn't that great either.
I quickly found how a 'Standard Australian Diet' (SAD) full of sodium, preservatives, additives and saturated fat can affect your health, and how therapeutic food can be when used in it's most natural form. The management of stress and sleep were also key to the management of my condition and 8 Years on I have successfully been able to control this disease. The best side effect of this transition of diet was I lost all of the weight I had put on during my pregnancy and I have been able to keep it off still today.
I became a Personal Trainer, firstly to look after my own fitness. It is what brought back my self esteem, my positive body image and mental health after having children and becoming a single mum.
Completing my first half marathon in 2014, I found how powerful exercise was to the human body and most importantly to the human mind. I have used exercise to work with others to help them improve their health and quality of life.
I soon realised I was really not going to have great success in personal training without a thorough understanding of nutrition. How were my clients expected to successfully lose weight and keep it off with the constant bombardment of fad diets and 'quick weight loss' eating programs - even I was confused!
My degree in Nutritional and Dietetic Medicine has armed me with everything I need to help my clients understand what works for them individually. No person is the same and should not be treated as such...
I work alongside families, individuals and businesses helping to guide them with practical advise on staple pantry foods, food preparation and education on understanding how to produce daily nutritious meals, alongside scientifically backed eating patterns to support optimal health. Underpinning those with lifestyle tools focusing on fitness, mindset and positive habit formimg, stress management and ways to enhance your sleep/bedtime routine to achieve a better quality of sleep.
To sum it all up, I don't live on the farm anymore and we now live fast paced lifestyles that bring their own health challenges..
BUT....
I will guide you and help to focus on your individual, family or workplace health, by assisting in making some clear and beneficial changes, that will lead to actions to return you to how we were born to live... with optimal health.
I look forward to working with you and would love to hear from you.
